Gacha and Loot Boxes Insights on Game Monetization

Monetization of games has been evolving. In the past, a classic retail of console and software had been a main stream but recently, a freemium scheme whereby players can download and play the game for free but is encouraged to pay for additional in-game goods, downloadable contents and subscription models have become very popular means. Among of them, “Gacha” or “loot box” method of monetization raises many legal questions as it encourages the player to pay real money for random or unknow in-game goods. Thus, one of the frequently asked questions is whether this “Gacha” or “loot box” scheme is similar or considered as “gambling” or not.
